The Christmas Tree Shop was a discount store chain that operated stores throughout New England and the east coast. They offered a wide range of products and it's much more than just Christmas products. The company had more than 80 stores ranging in size up to 58,000 sq.ft.
The Bilezikians opened their first store in 1970 on Route 6A in Yarmouth Port with an $85,000 investment. The family business became a hit. The store gained popularity by using real life customers in its TV ads, coupling testimonials with their catchy jingle, "Don't you just love a bargain." The concept seems to have a great success. It's true that they have a lot of bargains. They carry all kinds of merchandise but the selection vary by store and by time of the year. They get merchandise from everywhere and it's not always the same merchandise year around. The prices were very good, and the stores look good and neat inside.
Bed, Bath & Beyond purchased The Christmas Tree Shops for $200 million in June 2003. As part of that new partnership, the company opened a Christmas Tree Shop and a Bed, Bath & Beyond side by side in the former Ames store at the Turnpike Mall in Augusta, Maine. To my knowledge, it was a first for the company. The company did the same in 2008 at a new shopping center in Portsmouth NH. The plaza includes Christmas Tree Shops, Bed, Bath & Beyond and a future third retailer. Christmas Tree Shops opened many new stores between 2007 and 2017, entering new markets, new states. The chain now has more than 80 stores in 19 states. In 2023, Christmas Tree Shops placed itself under bankruptcy protection and then announced the closing of 10 stores. On July 1st 2023, it was announced that Christmas Tree Shops would liquidate its remaining roughly 70 stores unless a buyer emerges within the next week or so. In the end, all stores closed by the end of summer 2023.
