OCEAN STATE JOB LOT PLAZA

While today this property contains only one large store, years ago it was home to a multi-store shopping center. It started with Mammoth Mart, a supermarket and smaller stores.  Mammoth Mart became King’s and then Ames in the mid 80’s. Bonanza opened a steakhouse in the parking lot of the plaza.  For a moment, this “Ames Plaza” had Ames, a supermarket, Bonanza and a Laundrymat.

In 1990, Ames relocated to the Harbor Plaza in the larger former Zayre.  Around 1994, Walmart demolished the plaza to build a 94,000 sq.ft store.  In 2001, Bonanza closed. There were rumors about it being replaced by Applebee’s. However, a more recent site plan was showing a new block of small store planned for the area where the vacant Bonanza was.

Walmart eventually relocated elsewhere in town to a brand new building. Ocean State Job Lot opener in part of the store and Dollar Tree took the rest. In 2017, the former Bonanza building was razed.
