ORION CENTER

The Orion Center was built years ago as a shopping center that was anchored by Mammoth Mart. The shopping center was group of buildings located off Route 1 near its intersection with Sawyer Road located just south of the former Portland Twin Drive-In.

Over the years, stores have closed leaving the shopping center vacant. The complex was eventually converted to house to a few light industrial companies.

Dead River Properties, owner of the center since 1986, originally had plans to redevelop the former Orion Center into a retail center that would be designed to include banks, restaurants and pedestrian walkways. Rumors included a possible Stop & Shop supermarket. In August 2007, the new development plan for the vacant Orion Center, received its final approval from the town. The project was called "Scarborough Village Square"

In January 2008, Hannaford Supermarkets has purchased the Orion Center from Dead River Properties. In March 2010, MaineHealth bought the facility and is rehabbing two of the three buildings in the park. The facility is now known as the MaineHealth Professional Park. Less than two miles north on Route 1, a former Kmart store has been redeveloped into the MaineHealth Medical Center Scarborough Campus.
