OVERVIEW:

Almy's was acquired by Stop & Shop in 1985. In January 1987, Stop & Shop planned to sell the Almy's division in order to focus on their Bradlees discount department stores and Stop & Shop supermarkets. However, only a month later the company executives changed their minds. In February 1987, Stop & Shop Cos. announced that its Almy's division, comprising 19 department stores in the Northeast, would cease operations in May.
