I don’t have the exact date of opening for this shopping center, but it does not look like an old 70's plaza. It was most likely built in the 80’s or early 90’s. The plaza was once anchored by Service Merchandise, located at the left end of the building. Shaw’s was in the middle and there was a block of smaller stores to its right.
Service merchandise closed and stayed vacant for a while. Shaw’s relocated to this larger space and its store went from 45,800 sq.ft. to 66,400 sq.ft. The former Shaw’s has been divided and redeveloped into new retail space. The former Shaw's is pictures below.
Borders Books & Music and Old Navy opened in 2007 in that space. Coldwater Creek and Talbots later opened in the remaining available space. In 2011 Borders closed after the company's bankruptcy. In 2012 Fashion Bug announced it would closes all of its stores including the Brunswick location.
In 2016, it was announced that Petsmart and Bed,Bath & Beyond would open at the plaza. Bed,Bath & Beyond has relocated from their Topsham location. On February 2 2023, the plaza signed leases with New England restaurant chain Margaritas and bookseller Barnes & Noble. A week later, Bed, Bath & Beyond announced the closing of 150 stores including the Brunswick location. *
