TURNPIKE PLAZA

This shopping center opened in 1965.  It was then anchored by First National Foods and Rich's. It was the second Rich's to open in the entire chain. Five or six small stores were located between the two anchors. First National closed in 1981 and was replaced by Market Basket. Rich's Fabrics and $1$2$3 store opened later. Boston Hairstylists and Turnpike Cleaners were tenants too.

In March 1996, Rich's Fabrics and $1$2$3 closed because Rich's divested the stores due to their bankruptcy. Rich's finally closed in June 1996. All-for-A-Dollar replaced $1$2$3 but closed in January 1997. Other small stores closed following Rich's closure. Staples subleased Rich's in June 1997. In summer 1998, the closed small stores were demolished and replaced by a  21,000 sq.-ft A.C.Moore which opened in October. Bob's Stores opened in the other Rich's subspace in 1998 and expanded that space. A new pylon sign was installed in 1998.

Market Basket closed in 2013 when a new larger store was opened up the road in the former Sears space at the Somerset Plaza. Whole Foods opened in the former Market Basket recently, see story. As of 2019, it appears that Staples has closed. A.C.Moore also closed all stores and Ruby Tuesday closed several locations in northern New England.
