BELKNAP MARKETPLACE (Formerly Belknap Mall)

Belknap Mall is the only enclosed shopping mall in the Lakes Region. It opened in 1973 as a smaller rectangular mall with Shaw’s at one end a straight line of stores and Zayre at the other end.

Zayre later moved to an extension added at the back of the Mall. The newer part of the mall, with the newer and bigger Zayre, was built in early-Mid 1988. Ames quickly replaced Zayre while Decelle opening in part of the former Zayre in 1990. Decelle closed in 1996 and Blockbuster subleased Decelle in early 1997.

The mall used to be thriving but it declined over the years, losing stores here and there until 2002 when it abruptly lost its main anchor store, Ames. This Ames location was large, modern and bright unlike smaller older Ames stores. Ames closed in October 2002 after the company went bankrupt.

The mall then went through a major renovation inside and out. It upgraded the exterior with a more attractive mall style and added new tenants. Big Lots has leased 33,000 sq.ft. of the former Ames and is open since summer 2004. Mall officials also signed a deal with Peebles department stores for the other vacant part. That store opened on October 21, 2004. Today the Belknap Mall looks better and remains a popular shopping destination in the Lakes Region.

Peebles was eventually converted into a Peebles Outlet store and the store later closed. CVS left the mall after several years as a tenant. Maurices also closed its Belknap Mall store.  In 2022,  the mall has been renamed Belknap Marketplace.
