KINGS HY-WAY PLAZA
Address: 28 Portsmouth Avenue
City: Stratham, NH
Opening date: unknown
Kings Hy-Way Plaza is the largest shopping center in the Exeter/Stratham area. It looks relatively recent but probably was there for years. It was probably renovated in the early 90’s. The plaza once was anchored by Ames, Auto Palace, Osco Drug and others.
Auto Palace closed when the whole company was sold to other auto parts chains. Today the store is an Auto Zone. Brooks pharmacy acquired the New England Osco Drug stores and the plaza’s pharmacy was renamed to Brooks.
In 2002, Ames went out of business and the Stratham store closed in October of that year after nearly 25 years on site. Mill Stores opened in the former Ames. They were a 13-store chain selling unfinished wood furniture. Rite Aid replaced Brooks after the merger. Fashion Bug closed in 2013. Mill Stores closed the Nashua and Stratham stores in 2014. In 2017, Ocean State Job Lot opened in the former Mill Store space.
On the right side of the plaza once was a free-standing Shaw's supermarket. The store moved across the street and today the former Shaw's is occupied by Staples, Petlife and other stores.
