COMMENTARY

This New England based retail chain closed more than 17 years ago and there nothing left of it. I don't remember a lot about it and I only visited the Exeter location twice. Globe was a small discount store chain so it’s hard to find something about it. They had most of their stores in New England. Until recently, the Globe logo still stood on the pylon sign at the Airport Plaza in Gilford, NH. Also in Rochester, NH the Globe Plaza kept its Globe logo for years but was eventually renamed Spaulding Commons. In Exeter, the center is still called "Globe Shopping Plaza" and until a recent renovation, the original logo still was on the exterior wall (shown above). OVERVIEW:

Mr Gerald S. Winthrop was the principal owner of the Globe Department Stores in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. His office was in Methuen, Mass. The company had store locations in Gilford, Littleton, Gorham, Exeter, and Rochester, NH, Fall River and Methuen MA. The Exeter store was located at the Globe Plaza. That store later became a Price Mart. In Gorham and Littleton the store became Save-More department stores. They both are closed now. Another known location is Scranton, Pennsylvania. It seems that the chain closed everything in the early 1990's.

SITE VISITOR OVERVIEW:

«The whole chain closed in the early 90s (1992?). Its sad, because Globe was my favorite store, I would drive there most every Saturday I had off. The last time I went there was before Christmas (1991?), and the cashier asked if I found what I was looking for, I said "Yes, I always do here!", the cashier and the next one down didn't look so pleased and sheepishly mentioned "not many people seem to". I guess the word was out that the chain was doomed, but I knew nothing of it. Globe was gone before I could go back again. Globe was located in "Airport Plaza",on the sign today, the Globe "world" trademark still stands. Globe's motto beside a wall mounted clock (that looked very much like a stylized "globe") on the front inside wall was "Globe, time for values." Globe was a New England-based discount chain store. »
