SANFORD PLAZA

This is another plaza that had a common layout seen everywhere:  A department store, a supermarket and a block of small stores between the two anchors. Grant plaza was first anchored by a Shaw's supermarket at left and Grant City at right. Shaw's moved to the new Center for Shopping around 1989.

Marden's opened in the former supermarket as shown above. When Grant City closed, Marden's moved to that vacated space to have larger store. They transformed their former location (former Shaw's) into a Marden's Furniture & Carpet store.  So the plaza now has two Marden's.

Before the opening of the Center for Shopping down the road, the Sanford Plaza was the #1 retail center in Sanford. Today, Marden's is thriving but the rest of the plaza is quite empty and outdated. Until recently, the only other tenant was Norgetown Cleaners but it eventually closed. The center has many empty storefronts including what looks like a former Bank branch.

Save-A-lot opened between the two Marden's stores where the vacant bank and Norgetown were. The 13,230 sq.ft store was short-lived and eventually closed. The space is available as of 2020.
