I don't have much information about Mars Department stores. They were a small chain of discount stores. I never visited one of their stores and I can't tell you much more about them. If you have more information, contact us today.

OVERVIEW

More information soon! In 1982, Mars had only seven stores.generating $28.6 million in sales a year. By 1985, the company had three department store chains with a total of 26 stores across New England, and it made nearly $110 million in revenues that year.

In April 1989, Mars seeked bankruptcy court approval to sell three more of its stores. Stuart's Department Store offered $1,338,000 for the leases and fixtures for Mars' units in Athol and Salisbury, Mass. Capital Enterprises, Inc., of Leominster, Mass., offered in excess of $700,000 for another Mars store in Pelham, N.H. On May 18 1989, Mars, which had already sold several of its stores over the last two months, announced that it would liquidate the inventory in eight of its remaining nine units and then try to sell the leases for the locations.

The going out of business sale began in the summer of 1989. The inventory in the Bangor, Maine, store had been liquidated previously.
