This plaza originally was anchored by J.M.Fields. It may also have had a J.M.Fields food store (possibly Food Fair). The two stores were eventually replaced by Caldor and Marshalls.
This was the sole Caldor store in Northern New England. When Caldor took over the building, it made minimal alterations to the exterior. The only notable change was the removal of an overhang on the left side of the storefront. Interestingly, the façade closely mirrored that of the closed Bradlees location in Concord, NH—which itself had previously operated as a JM Fields.
Caldor went out of business in 1999 so the store closed. The building remained intact with the Caldor logo still up on the front of the store and on the pylon sign in 2002 as shown in the picture above. The Caldor building was demolished around 2003. By then, Marshalls had moved across the street to the Bedford Mall and its former space had become a HomeGoods.
Stop & Shop later opened a supermarket on the site, reorienting the building to face Kilton Road rather than South River Road, like Caldor. This change in layout prompted HomeGoods to relocate its entrance to a different side of the building to accommodate the redesigned shopping center. Stop & Shop ceased operations in all New Hampshire locations in 2013, including this one. Around 2016, Hannaford moved in to take its place. The former Stop & Shop gas station was subsequently demolished.
