New store are replacing these closing chains with non-standard concepts. Christmas Tree Shops is offering an array of merchandise often not seen at other national chain. Big Lots and Ocean State Job Lot are closeout chains offering overstock, discontinued and other discounted merchandises but also offer regular name-brand products. Other small discount store chains are also emerging.

Ollie's is a large closeout chain currently operating around 569 stores in 32 states.
Ocean State Job Lot is a Rhode Island-based closeout chain with more than 120 stores.
Christmas Tree Shops was not a closeout store but offered a changing array of merchandise at bargain prices. CTS once had more than 80 stores.
Big Lots was the largest closeout chain of the U.S. when it operated more than 1,400 stores. The chain was under bankruptcy as of 2025 and closed all stores but was quickly relaunched.
Bob's Discount was a Maine closeout chain started in 1991. The company closed and emerged as Chapter 11 Buybacks Job Lot.
