BEDFORD MALL

  • Address: 73 South River road

  • City: Bedford, NH

  • Opening date: Unknown

This mall was first anchored by W.T.Grant and Purity Supreme at the other end. Purity closed in the 70's and became Alexander's Supermarket. That chain was later acquired by Shop'n save(Hannaford) and the supermarket relocated in early 1991 to the nearby Bedford Grove plaza. MVP sports opened a 25,000 sq.-ft store in November 1992 in the space formerly occupied by Alexander's and Drug Emporium.

Montgomery Ward replaced Grant's after that company went bankrupt. Around 1997, a large extension was added in front of the mall with space for two new stores: Paperama and Marshalls. Marshalls opened at the mall after it moved out of the Caldor Plaza across the street.

In 1997 Montgomery Ward closed. Bed & Bath moved away during that same year. Paperama closed in 1998 and was replaced by Staples in 1999. Linens'n Things and Bob's store each took a half of the former Wards.

All the MVP Sports were eventually renamed Decathlon sports megastore. Shortly after that move, Decathlon USA closed all it's U.S. stores.

In 2008, Linens'n Things filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and closed all stores by years end. With multiple vacancies the mall was again struggling.

Then came a project to redevelop the mall into a large plaza that featured a proposed relocation of Staples and Marshalls and a large anchor store that could be up to 100,000 sq.ft.

Kohl's became that anchor and Marshalls moved into the former Linens'nThings. The rest of the mall was demolished and Staples moved to a new free-standing building on the lot. In 2011, the new buildings were ready on the left of the property and the facade of the remaining mall was being renovated. A new pylon sign has been installed as well.

Kohl's opened in March 2012. The Fresh Market, Chipotle, Starbucks and Pet Supplies Plus were recently added to the mall. Bob's stores will closed in 2017. In July 2018, The Fresh Market announced the closing of 15 stores including the Bedford location.

In September 2019, Sierra Trading Post and HomeSense opened in the former Bob's Store.
