MAINE COAST MALL

Maine Coast Mall opened in the summer of 1971. Grants and IGA opened in October 1971 and Mammoth Mart opened in 1973. The location became King's. Ames opened at the Maine Coast Mall on April 29, 1982. It was the third Ames in Maine and the first Ames store to open with an electronic cash register system. Before Ames, the site was home to a King’s Department Store.

Above is a picture showing the mall in 1974. Woolworth's also had a store at the mall and it eventually became a Woolco. In September 1982, Woolco announced the closing of all U.S. stores including the Ellsworth location and 5 other stores in Maine.

Pictured above is the 65,000 sq.ft. Ames which closed in October 2002 following Ames’ bankruptcy. Marden’s then moved in the former Ames. They reduced the office and storage space to add more retail space to the store.

The wood shingle exterior of the mall has been replaced by a new metal cladding after Marden's moved in. The Maine Coast Mall has a layout similar to Lewiston Mall and Turnpike Mall. An indoor concourse with stores on one side and windows on the other.

Marden's eventually relocated to a former Walmart in town and left a large vacant space at the mall. Early in 2011 it was announced that Tjmaxx would move in 30,000 sq.ft of that space. Friendly’s closed several restaurants nationwide including the Ellsworth location. It has since been replaced by Governor’s Restaurant.

Since 2010, Hallmark. Gold Star Cleaners, The Green Tea Restaurant, Maine Pet & Aquarium and Shear Design all have relocated or gone out of business. Mr. Paperback closed in February 2012. Later in 2012 Fashion Bug announced it would close all stores including the Ellsworth location leaving another empty spot at the mall. In May 2017, Payless Shoesource announced the closing of 387 U.S. stores including the Ellsworth location.
