Apple Tree Mall was built in 1982. It was then anchored by Shaw's supermarket. Zayre opened a store in June 1986 at the shopping center. Zayre was acquired by Ames in 1988. The former Zayre space became home to an Ames department store. The store did not last long and was closed shortly after opening. In the spring of 1992, Tjmaxx announced it would open a store in part of the former Ames/Zayre which had sat vacant for nearly 2 years. Today that space has been divided into Tjmaxx and HomeGoods. The two stores closed and in May 2016, Tjmaxx and HomeGoods reopened in a combined store at the Market Basket plaza nearby. A developper purchased the Apple Tree Mall in 2018 and is seeking new tenants.
