TURNPIKE MALL

Turnpike Mall is the only enclosed shopping mall between Lewiston and Bangor. It's a smaller strip mall that was built in 1968 and opened officially in 1969. Sears and Zayre were the two anchor stores located at each end of the mall. The interior walkway of the mall is short and narrow. It only featured a handful of stores which once included McCrory, CVS and Hit or Miss. Over the years, these stores were replaced by Olympia Sports, SamGoody, Maine Made Shop, Payless Shoes, Petco, Tj maxx and GameDay Athletics.

The mall has been renovated inside and out and Sears finally installed a more modern logo. In 2002, Ames closed after the bankruptcy of the company. The 60,000 sf. store remained vacant until late 2006. Sam Goody closed its doors in 2006 and Payless Shoesource moved out of the mall.

The mall went through a tough period but it had potential and finally, new stores opened to bring it back to its old glory. In fall 2006, Christmas Tree Shops and Bed, Bath & Beyond opened in the former Ames. Like other CTS stores, the Augusta store has a classic and unique facade. Fashion Bug relocated from the Augusta Plaza to open a new store at the Turnpike Mall.

In 2009, a pad site was being developed for a future restaurant which ended up being Texas Roadhouse which opened in October 2009. In 2012 Fashion Bug announced it would close all of its stores including the Augusta location.

In 2015, Maine Made & More and Beverly's Card & Gift leases were not renewed by the landlord and had to close their doors at the Turnpike Mall. Rumors were then saying that a national chain could move into a larger space made up of all the merged smaller vacated stores.

Nothing happened in 2016 but in January 2017, Sears announced it would close dozens of stores by April 2017 and the Augusta location was in that list. In 2017, it was revealed that Tjmaxx would open in the former Circuit City at the Augusta Marketplace meaning the Turnpike Mall store would close. In September 2018, the mall was put up for sale. Olympia Sports eventually closed too leaving no more stores inside the mall itself other than AAA and Petco. Site plans today show possible development at two pad sites in front of the former Sears as well as a possible merger of smaller stores into a bigger space that could be home to an AllOut Fitness.

In the Fall of 2019, the former Tjmaxx was occupied by a Spirit Halloween store. In 2021, it was revealed that a new urgent care facility at the Turnpike Mall. ConvenientMD will occupy a new building located in a corner of the property. In September 2022, a news report confirmed that documents were filed with the city showing that two retail stores were interested in opening locations at the Turnpike Mall. If confirmed, a Hobby Lobby would use 43,000 sq.ft of the former Sears and Harbor Freight Tools would take another part of the building and would maybe expand as well. As of January 2023, Harbor Freight is open and construction work is going on inside the other part of the former Sears. In April 2023, Bed Bath & Beyond filed for bankruptcy and confirmed it would close all remaining stores, so the Augusta location will likely close sometime in 2023. Christmas Tree Shops closed its doors in August 2023 after the company's bankruptcy. Hobby Lobby eoeped in part of the former Sears in September 2023.
