NORTHWOOD PARK SHOPPING CENTER
Address: 750 Main Street
City: Lewiston, ME
Opening date: 1960
I have conflicting data about this shopping center. It looks like it could be the oldest shopping center in the Lewiston-Auburn area. First thing is a plaque on the exterior wall of the center reading: Robert H. Sawyer Building – 1960. So the shopping center probably was built in 1960.
In 1966, there was a large number of store and this center probably was the largest in Lewiston. Back then, W.T.Grant and Mammoth Mart were the anchors along with an IGA Foodliner.
Mammoth Mart was remodeling their store in February 1969 and six years later they were still at that location. W.T.Grant relocated to the new Lewiston Mall on East Avenue. Marden's moved into the former Mammoth Mart in 1983.
Today, Marden’s uses nearly all the space of the shopping center. Inside walls were removed to create a larger store. The store has a stairway to a large basement which has an access door on the back of the building. This area is where Holiday Lanes were located.
