SOUTH WILLOW SHOPPING CENTER

This retail plaza was built in 1975 and has not changed much over the years. It was anchored by K-mart and other stores including a free-standing restaurant. The location of the plaza was perfect in the heart of Manchester’s shopping district, near major roads and highly visible. However, stores at the plaza still struggled and closed for some reason. In November 1999, Filene’s Basement closed. The store was replaced by Staples.

In 2002, as part of its Chapter 11 reorganization plan, Kmart closed 284 stores including the Manchester location. With that decision, Kmart left the retail hub of Manchester, New Hampshire's largest city.

That store had a great location and not that much competition around it with only two regular-sized Walmart stores in the market. Other area competitors were already closed or near bankruptcy like Caldor, Bradlees and Ames. Kmart should have invested to improve, expand or relocate that store. Like elsewhere in northern New England, Kmart simply gave up.

Burlington Coat Factory opened in that space in the fall of 2003. The store closed possibly late 2010 or early 2011. It has been replaced by Hobby Lobby. Texas Roadhouse opened a restaurant in that plaza to the left of Hobby Lobby. Burlington Coat Factory eventually came back to Manchester this time in a former Stop & Shop supermarket.
