WELLS PLAZA
Address: US Route 1
City: Wells, ME
Opening date: Unknown
This type of small shopping center is a common sight around New England: a department store, a supermarket and a couple of small stores. Wells is located between Biddeford and the NH border. It was a perfect area for Ames to open a store, an undeserved market. I was told that Globe could have been the first discount store at the Wells Plaza, however, a 1975 newspaper ad for Grant City mentions a Wells Plaza location. IGA used to be the supermarket anchor and has later been replaced by Shop’n save.
Ames went out of business in 2002 and the store has been replaced by Maine-based Reny’s. They have used 31,800 sq.ft. of the former 52,000 sq.ft. Ames store. They also kept most of the original Ames fixtures, checkouts and interior signage. Dollar Tree opened later in the rest of the vacant space. On November 1st 2019, Olympia Sports announced the closing of 76 stores including the Wells location.
