MARKETPLACE AT AUGUSTA
Address: Civic Center Drive
City: Augusta, ME
Opening date: 1993
Marketplace at Augusta (Originally Augusta Marketplace) is the largest shopping center in Maine. Originally planned as an enclosed mall, the project eventually became an open-air shopping center. It all started with Walmart and Sam's Club in 1993. Staples, Red Lobster and a strip of stores: (Michaels, Barnes & Nobles, Pet Quarters, and a Cinema) that were added in 1996. Red Lobster was eventually replaced by Olive Garden. In 1999, Walmart expanded their store to more than 190,000 sq.ft. thus becoming the first Supercenter in Maine.
In 2000, a Home Depot was built along with a strip of smaller stores including Famous Footwear, Linens'n Things, Pac Sun, Gap and Old Navy. A small block of stores was also added between Walmart and Home Depot. It included Radio Shack and Panera Bread. Another strip has been built and contains Pier1 imports, EB Games and a LongHorn Steakhouse.
Another section was added behind Home Depot more recently. This latest addition included Kohl's, Circuit City and a 54,000 sq.ft Dick's Sporting Goods. Two new restaurants opened in that area: Ruby Tuesday and Red Robin Burger. Circuit City held its grand opening on February 23 2006.
The site plan once featured a future expansion containing many small stores and a 98,000 sq.-ft anchor store yet to be named. That new addition would have been located to the right hand side of the Kohl's area, directly behind Home Depot and the strip of stores where Old Navy is located. There is also another parcel available and that has never been developed to the right of Circuit City.
Augusta Marketplace suffered a triple loss during 2008-2009. Linens'n Things and Circuit went out of business and Pet Quarters closed their Augusta location. In September 2011, Staples announced it would close the Marketplace location. Staples operates another location at Augusta Crossing.
A new building was recently added in the parking lot near Pier1 Imports. It houses Sally Beauty, Supercuts, Chipotle and Elevation Burger. In 2017, it was revealed that Tjmaxx would relocate its Turnpike Mall store to the former Circuit City and that part of the building would become a Five Below.
In March 2020, Ruby Tuesday closed its doors for good. In May 2020, Pier1 imports announced the closure of all of its remaining stores. Previously, Radio Shack, Dress Barn and Payless Shoes had closed du to their parent companies' financial troubles.
