Every year Melissa Larson, Wholly Rags, sponsors a show of art made from recycled and repuposed objects. Along with that she asks for quilt squares in a theme, which she assembles into a quilt.
This year the theme was the Corona virus epidemic. I made three squares - each 12" square - for this quilt. Since I had made over 100 face masks using scraps of printed cotton donated by friends and neighbors, I used the scraps from these masks to make a dozen tiny face masks, which constituted one quilt square. I also noticed visitors not wearing masks, which inspired the 'Stay Home' square. Finally, the Japanese "Three C's" campaign inspired the "No Crowds" square, also made of scraps from the face masks.

Jim Ludden has been sewing since the seventh grade. Here he makes masks for the hospital, food pantry, and friends.
Dozens of people all over Taos and Colfax counties have pitched in to make masks and protective clothing for hospital workers, grocery store clerks, teachers, bus drivers and their own friends and families. Here are a few. Do you know someone in the community sewing masks for others? Take a photo, include their name and a little about them and who they are sewing masks for. Taos News will publish the photos periodically. Send photos to editor@taosnews.com.
