Well, we don’t really have the porch roof waterproof yet, but it rained hard yesterday, and it was mostly dry under the new decking on the front porch. Lalo, Ulisses, and Eli spent considerable time selecting matching boards to form the visible ceiling of the porch. When it was all sheathed they laid black building paper (which you probably know as ‘tar paper’). This will temporarily shed water, but will permanently keep insects from inhabiting the space between the ceiling and the actual roof. The roof needs to slope two ways towards the scupper. We sloped the vigas, so it slopes toward the north, but we will saw 2x4s diagonally so they form tapered furring strips under the OSB decking.
The copper-lined scuppers (canales) should arrive today, so we can complete the details of the parapets and the roof prior to installing the actually waterproof membrane on the roof.
Randy Cisneros came today and installed the sheet metal ducts between the floor slab and the mechanical room. They will draw air through the floor slab to maintain a constant temperature in the house.Gus (‘Sparky de Taos’) the electrician nearly finished the wiring in the house. Today he will work in the mechanical room and, I think, be ready for inspection.
During the heavy rain today the roof deck kept us dry, even without actual waterproofing. We had taped the joints in the OSB decking, except around one vent and where I patched the roof deck at the main scupper. We will polish up those details before we can get the roofers up here from Santa Fe. But we will also have to wait for dry weather. So far we don’t have two consecutive days of promised dry! Yes, we need the water, but I could use a roof, too!
