May 1957 I drove my father's Alfa Romeo Guiletta Spyder for 40.0 miles per gallon on a Mobil AAA Safety-Economy run of 120 miles through Salinas, San Jose, Santa Cruz, and back to Watsonville. Because the car was so light, it did not compete on ton-miles per gallon (44.12) against the heavier Oldsmobile, Buick, and Rambler.
See article below from Watsonville Register-Pajaronian, May 25, 1957.
Summer of 1956 I worked with John G Eiskamp to build a car. We were given a 1939 Cadillac and tried to put its large engine into a Model A Ford. (See right) However, the Ford frame was not strong enough, so Johnny found a Chevrolet coupe that already had a LaSalle rear end. We rebuilt the engine, installed it on the frame and returned the body to the frame. This allowed us to test drive the car, but we left for college before it could be licensed.
