On Thursday evenings the Chamber of Commerce sponsors a local band to play dance music in the Taos Plaza. Residents come carrying their folding chairs to listen and dance the two-step for a couple of hours. They rotate bands from week to week. It is all free, and the main evidence of the sponsors is banners around the gazebo and the reading of the list of business names at the beginning. The crowd — and it is a pretty good crowd — seems to be a cross-section of the local population, with a few tourists mixed in. Old, young, Anglo and Hispanic, business people and hippies, dancers and watchers, single mothers with their three-year-olds, the Hot Dog Lady and a few crazies. Seems to be a good window on the local Taos population.
During the day Jake, Lalo, and Eli installed all the windows in my house. This involved sticking waterproof tape all around the openings, silicone sealant, and many screws. I prepared each window by removing all the packing (they were well packed) and drilling the holes for the screws in the flanges. Tomorrow we will put the lintel beams above the windows and stick another layer of waterproof tape around the edges to seal out insects, water, and air. This house will be air-tight. The window in the photo (right) is the largest and lights (and heats) the garage. A similar window lights the study.I picked up the copper canale liners from the sheet metal shop (they had added brackets to support rain chains). This is the last bit of material we need before the roofers come. We need to find two consecutive days with dry weather so that we can install the roof insulation one day and the rubber roof membrane the next day.
