In this photo you can see some bits of construction detail. Eli (contractor, in the blue shirt) and Gabriel (carpenter) are looking at the studs that will form the inner wall between the living room and the entry portal. This wall will be lifted onto the bolts which are sticking out of the concrete on the left and a bit behind Eli, adjacent to the outer wall that is already erected. (Double-click on the photo for a larger view.)You may notice that some of the wood looks more nearly red than others. The wall sills (that are bolted to the concrete) are made of treated lumber, which is more pink. The window opening with the stud leaning against it is in the Mud Room. This window sill is higher than the sill on the floor.
In the foreground you see a pipe sticking out of the floor, near the tangle of air hose (for the pneumatic nail gun). This pipe is the main electric conduit from the electric meter near the street.
On the right you see a large opening. This opening is for the French doors that open onto the south patio - a series of four ‘windows’, the outer two will open outwards. (I call them 'doors'.) The header (beam above the opening that supports the wall and roof above) has not been built or installed in this picture. To the left of the ladder, above the east window of the Study, the header has been installed.
The diagonal braces on the outside are required because the walls have not been connected at the corners. This will happen when we put the OSB (strandboard) sheathing on the outside walls.
The pile of scrap wood near the yellow table saw will be used for blocking and the smallest pieces go for firewood.
The gap in the back wall surrounds the shower. This wall is on a raised curb and the ceiling is only 8’, so it will be built last so as not to confuse pre-cut pieces of lumber.
