First Remodel

So, the house is not yet complete, and we already have our first remodel! It turns out that the light fixtures on either side of the medicine cabinet are narrow — more narrow than the normal octagonal junction boxes installed for light fixtures. So we cut holes in the wall, removed the boxes, installed rectangular boxes, and repaired the holes. At the same time I discovered that two different subcontractors installed electric junction boxes for the bath exhaust fan timer. So we removed the extra box and had another hole to repair.

Jake is making progress installing casing around the bifold doors. I have been struggling to keep up priming the wood for the casings in the cold. After he has the casing installed I spackle the nail holes and paint the trim. Originally I was going to paint the door casing the darker color of the baseboard and picture molding, but that color does not look good there, so I’ll paint the casing the same light color as the doors.

The last of the kitchen cabinets was installed today. They still need to bring the fronts (doors and drawer fronts) from the shop, but what I have looks nice. I need to bring the range hood from storage so the electrician can connect it.The last of the slate tile is now set in mortar in the mud room. I hope we can grout it tomorrow. Eli sealed the slate on the porch and we will probably seal the slate in the mud room too, as the sealer prevents the grout from soaking in to the surface of the tiles, making them difficult to clean. While the grout sets we will have to use the back door, as both the front and the garage entrances pass over slate.

Eli is just about finished laying the glass wall tile in the shower. The grout we got is the right color, but the sand in the grout contrasts with the matte finish of the glass tile. We may buy grout filled with tiny glass beads, that sparkles a bit and is said to be somewhat translucent.

I had ordered what I thought was a 36” wide door mat of AstroTurf, but it turned out to be narrower. Still very useful at scraping grit off our shoes and I can move it to another doorway when I get the larger one.
