Wednesday we removed the last material from the hole beneath house site. The material consists of two distinctly different kinds of soil, as you can see in the photos, which were taken at the same scale. There is a mixture of silt and clay in the right photo, separated from rocks and sand seen in the left photo. The rocks are in lenses, and in the video below you can see a lens of rocks beneath the pile that is immediately next to the hole. This rocky material is very unstable and collapses easily, which it did. Just to the right of the rocks is a deposit of silt.
When digging in the northeast corner we initially found a plastic tape printed with the message ‘Caution Sewer Below’. We could not believe this, because there was no evidence on drawings and a query of the subdivision plumbing contractor yielded a ‘no’. But a white 3” plastic pipe labeled ‘2010’ was stronger evidence, especially when we broke it. It would pass through our foundation, so must be rerouted, if it is to be used. It appears to run to the barn, which has water but no sewer connection. We removed at least a dozen 12-cubic-yard trucks full of dirt — in addition to the piles all around the hole and four bucket-loaders of topsoil delivered to a neighbor. However, we figure we will need to backfill about 120 cubic yards outside the foundation. We can’t keep more because we need room to work! You can double-click on the video to make it bigger.
