I’ve had my nose in books for a few days. First I got on a kick that it would be fun to design a half-timbered house, because they look nice and appear easy to build. It turns out that my best friend at work has connections to a man who has researched and built a couple of houses in the old manner. We are going to Minden Friday to see him and learn as much as we can.
Second on my work list has been my organ notes, which I collected and rewrote. I found a book (through this friend) on organ stops and scaling, and am madly taking notes on it. It is unfortunately out of print, but tomorrow I’ll go to the used book store to see if they can track down a copy.
Yesterday we went to a cloister to see an exposition of Westfalish art and architecture from 800 to 1600 AD. Excellently done and very large. After we went to a concert in Burg Sternberg, where his step-father lived. Then today I heard an organ concert in memory of Schweitzer, played by the organist of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig on the big organ in town. Excellent.
Oh, yes, Friday I drove Gudrun and Heidi to the train in Hannover. They are on a two-week vacation, sailing along the Dalmation coast of Yugoslavia [origin of many people in Watsonville]. While in Hannover I looked at the shops, the old Market Church and the Rathaus. When we go up to pick up the girls a week Sunday, we’ll go for a walk in the formal gardens of the kings of Hannover, reputedly beautiful.
Kleuker wants to build three more organs this year and finish two, although we’ve only built two big ones so far. Big hopes. I may be in Düsseldorf from the 11th to the 18th unless I can somehow get out of it. Otherwise I’ll be here until 15 November.
