I’m back in Seattle with the overall task of vacating my house there. That means I need to deal with all the stuff that I did not deal with a year ago.
Some of this stuff I will move to Taos, including kitchen pots and dishes, bed, and some chairs, among other things.
Of the remaining there are two categories: stuff that might appropriately be rented out with the house ‘partly furnished’, and all the rest.
The rest includes some old furniture which was really nice when it was new in 1928 but may not be suitable for a modern renter, usually because it is too tired.
For example, Carol had a small desk that she got from her mother. It had been stored in the cellar for several years and had a light film of mold growing on it. So today I unscrewed the turned legs and washed (yes, washed with soap and water and a mild scrubbing sponge) this desk. The mold came off easily, but I also scrubbed off years of accumulated furniture oil and dirt, changing much of the surface from black to lustrous brown and turning the warm soapy water from clear to brown. I washed it until I could wipe the surface dry with a clean cloth and still have the cloth appear white after wiping. The left leg in the photo has had only the mold washed off, the other was scrubbed. This left the surface colorful but less that beautiful, as the sheen was mostly gone along with the dirt. But I had some furniture polish, and that make it beautiful again, if you ignore nearly a century of scratches in the wood. So it is ready to take to Beth, who has wanted this desk for years.
I also have two spindly rocking chairs, which are nice, but are too large for my small house in Taos. These have come unglued near the rockers, so will need some minor repairs. Then I have to find a place where I can photograph them without distracting background, advertise them on CraigsList and hope for the best.
