12 or 13 September 1966
We visited a man who is expert in half-timbered houses, built his own, with thatched roof. He is also M.D. Also visited a sculptor friend [Hagen Lükewille] who lives in a converted farmhouse—very effective. [I made drawings of this house in my notebook.] The living room was once the barn (attached) and is two stories high. They built in a huge fireplace at one end with a balcony over it to get to bedrooms upstairs. I also get a new (printed 1900) book from England about cottages in Sussex and Essex.
Gudrun is (or was last week, the postcards come very slowly) having very good weather on the coast of Yugoslavia. Her brother [Harmut] and I drive to Hannover Sunday to fetch the girls. Hope we have good weather so we can go strolling in the beautiful Herrenhausen gardens there. I went for a drive to Rinteln and Lemge and walked through these charming old towns along the Weser River.
Yes, I cashed in my Peace Corps plane ticket. Herr Kleuker will pay the difference for the new one. The car I’ll ship to San Francisco, even if I work a week or two in Harvard. This evening I helped a friend who is rebuilding his house. For all his efforts (plumbing, wiring, plastering, paint, floors, etc) he only pays $15 a month in rent.
