Shrubs for Taos

This post is akin to Trees for Taos, but for smaller vegetables.

  • Amelancier alnifolia Serviceberry. 10' tall, upright, tolerates alkaline clay soil, full sun to part shade. Fall color, edible fruit. Goes well with Gambel Oak. Drought tolerant.
  • Amelancier utahensis Utal Serviceberry. 6' shrub. Keep away from junipers. Used for screening and hedges. attracts songbirds.
  • Atriplex canescens Saltbush. to 6' tall groundcover or background. Tolerates alkaline, dry soil (do not fertilize). Full harsh sun. Shelters nearby plants. Very low maintenance.
  • Ceratoides lanata White Sage. 1-3' looks like 'wooly sage'. Does well in alkaline soil, tolerates heat, cold, drought. long life
  • Juniperus horizontalis Creeping Juniper. 1' high prostrate, spreading. Adaptable to soils, dry, but wants full sun
  • Potentilla fruticosa Shrubby Cinquefoil. Deciduous shrub 3' hi and wide. Adaptable to alkaline, dry, clay soil. long yellow bloom season. should be pruned way back periodically
  • Rhus trilobata Sumac 3-6'. dry shrub border forming thick tangle. Full sun to part shade. very drought tolerant. long life. attractive fall color, easly transplanted. Attracts wildlife

Vines (for use on garage west wall):

  • Parthenocissus quinquefolia Virginia Creeper. Spreads 50-70' attracts birds. Needs fertile soil to become established, but OK after. Full sun. Does it damage stucco?
