Wow. I’m kinda tired today. I went to work at 7am, raking rocks from the piles of dirt. Some of the soil was mostly fist-sized rock, with seemingly just enough sand to fill the gaps between the rocks. Other soil was mostly clay and silt with only occasional rocks.
Regardless, I don’t want my garden plants to have to compete with rocks for root space. I am, of course, rapidly running out of places to store the rocks (I had the same problem in Seattle) but still don’t stop.
Once the crew arrived at 8am I went to work laying out, cutting, and holding boards for the bathroom roof. This roof is slanted two ways to shed the water from behind and around the rooftop mechanical room. Eli and I did the layout, and Jake and I started the construction.
I got pulled off the bath roof to help with more parapets. Today we were filling in the parapet corners with styrofoam. There are inside corners, outside corners, and simple transitions between high and low parapets, as well as inside corners between high and low parapets. Now I really see why the cost of construction is fundamentally affected by the number of corners.
I skipped out about 11am to clarify with the roofer exactly what type of insulation was needed between the roof deck and the glued-down rubber membrane, and found a supplier for this material and the special fasteners.
Then I ran off to eat lunch with ‘the geezers’, a loose group of about 20 old men who lunch together in a local restaurant once a week. Actually I walked (not ran) both ways to the restaurant — one of the benefits of my location in Taos.
Then back to work on parapets. By 2:30pm I was bushed and needed to sit for a bit. Fortunately there is some shade under the trees on my lot, as the temperature was in the mid-70’s today.
At 4pm I had to walk home, shower, and walk to my interior designer’s house for a consult on interior and exterior doors. We also confirmed my changes to the kitchen cabinet proposal and the layout of the mud room.
I was so tired that I didn’t remember to take any photos today. Sigh. There is always tomorrow.
