Today the gas company installed the gas meter and we have heat and hot water. It was about 3pm by the time the furnace was operational, and by then the indoor temperature had risen to 52° with the help of an electric heater. But five minutes after the furnace came on the temperature had risen to 62°, although it rose more slowly thereafter. The humidity was 46%. (We want to monitor the humidity to see how the slab and under-slab concrete blocks are drying. While waiting for the heat I hung a second bell near where I plan to locate the dining table. This was the dinner bell for years in Seattle and many friends and family remember it. Yesterday I hung a much larger steel bell outside by the back door. The larger bell is a somewhat smaller version of one we took to La Garnacha, Nicaragua, for the chapel, carrying it in a large duffel as checked baggage.I keep finding these strange things (like the bells) while looking for the eating and cooking utensils. Most of the remaining boxes are labeled ‘art’ or ‘nick-nacks’ [sic] and I plan to open them last. There are a couple large boxes with their labels facing the wall and obstructed by other furniture or boxes. But I am gradually getting to the stuff I need as well as a few things I wish had not been moved. I had three people packing in different parts of the house and I could not supervise all of them all the time!
I have a lot of empty boxes and crumpled packing paper. Took one van-full to the recycling center today.
Eli and Lalo got a good start on the linen closet. The mud room closet is basically finished, but still needs doors. We will have to locate suitable hinges and handles for these doors. We decided on colors for the linen closet (white melamine laminate inside, Light Navajo (same as the doors) on the outside.
Every visitor has remarked on the nice colors. They do go well together. The architect came by to show the house to a personal friend.
