Hasn’t been much to do while the plasterers are here. They finished the south and east sides of the house by 3pm (when I left) and are wrapping around the front (north) side of the bedroom. There is a lot of detail work around the porch. Each of six vigas intersects with plaster at three different planes. That has to be masked and carefully plastered. Not much room for five men to work, so we’ll see if they all come tomorrow. But the mechanical room (on the roof) needs plaster, too.Three times a day they wet the fresh plaster walls, flooding them with water. I noticed that water comes in under the study window — not a good sign. The rain will never come down as fast as the garden nose, but I still don’t want my walls and floor wet. There is presently a pretty big puddle in that corner, which happens to be low. (The rest of the slab is quite flat.)
This morning I bought a replacement for my stolen impact driver (and bits). Then I drove up to Questa to register my car in New Mexico.
I had heard good things about the service at the department of motor vehicles there, and — after my lengthy experience with the department of motor vehicles in Taos — decided to give it a try. There was no one waiting or being served when I entered. That was a good sign. The woman who works there is very pleasant and helpful. She copied my necessary papers, inspected the VIN and the milage on the car, and I got a new title to the vehicle, a new license plate (New Mexico only uses one), paid my dues, and drove home.
Yesterday I received most of the lighting fixtures and lamps that I had ordered. I even got the range hood, which will need slight modification so it also controls the exhaust in the kitchen ceiling. There is now a pretty big pile of plumbing and lighting fixtures in the garage.
I have been going in and out of the community barn ever since I arrived. Whenever I do, I notice that the door frame paint is peeling badly. It apparently was never painted, and the factory primer does not withstand the sun. Actually, no primer is designed to withstand the sun.
So today I bought a can of primer. I also scraped, sanded, and washed both the door and the frame. I then primed the frame. It already looks better. I’ll paint it with the same exterior paint I used on my roof.
