After I left yesterday for the community meeting, Eli got the final porch beam trimmed to fit and placed. Today we got all the major structure built. There is still much work to do, but we put the vigas — that support the porch roof — in place.
I had to decide whether to place the vigas directly on the main beam (seems more authentic) or put a 2x4 under the vigas so the plaster can be more easily spread. True to form, I chose the harder method, so the crew had to cut short, individual pieces to fit between the six vigas. We installed the vigas so that they slope away from the house towards the north. We will still need to slope the roof east and west so the water flows out the canale. We will add tapered shims and OSB (Oriented Strand Board) decking above the rough-sawn ceiling boards to achieve the desired drainage.
Tomorrow is ‘official’ Independence Day, and I assumed that the crew would take the day off. Wrong. They all want to work. So I trust we will get the ceiling on the porch. Then we have to build a parapet and mount the canale (which is at the sheet metal shop getting its copper liner).
