My, what a madhouse. Thursday the Institut made an ‘ausflug’ to Augsburg, where we saw an art exhibit, the first public housing project, and several churches; one with a beautiful new organ in a chancel that is higher than it is long. Then we went to Nördlingen, which is not as nice or quaint as I remember, Dinkelsbühl, and returned by way of the Neresheim Monastery. That was Thursday.
Friday, after class (6pm) we left for Salzburg. We ate in a place called “Sigmundsklose” with live zither music at 10:30. Next day we saw where Sound of Music was filmed, a couple of palaces, and the fortress over the city. We ate in Peterskeller and shared the table with a German family with whom we had good conversation. Our bed, breakfast, and bath in a Pension was $1.75 per night! I spent a good bit of time shopping—window- and otherwise—for Salzburg is loaded with neat little shops.
Sunday we went to a choral mass in the middle Baroque cathedral and later saw the waterworks at Hellbrunn. We went with a girl who lived there for a year on exchange from Oberlin. Fabulous city. Best in Germanic Europe.
Monday was recovery day, for on Tuesday two carloads of us (different bunch) went to Munich after lunch to the Oktoberfest. Since I was driving I had to stay sober, but we all had fun. I tried to call my ex-professsor from Pomona [R. Nelson Smith] but I don’t think he had arrived from US yet. By the way: we split the gasoline cost—the trip to Salzburg and back (400 miles) cost only $1.60 each.
Ja, tomorrow the violinist is flying to Berlin and I’m driving her to the airport to save her a lot of trouble with a heavy suitcase. Then Friday and Saturday we have our final exam. Sunday evening the organist and soprano give a concert (unfortunately the violinist and pianist must leave tomorrow) in the Stadtkirche [town church]. Monday morning I go to Ludwigsburg to look at the school and Tuesday (probably) drive on to Brackwede. I wrote to Herrn Kleuker (auf Deutsch) asking him to find me a room, so I should have no trouble with that—I hope.
