We have dug out the garage and the bed, bath, study sides. Eli was using the middle (living and kitchen areas) as a ramp to get out of the hole. But now we have run out of room to store all this dirt. We have piles everywhere. Even across the road. There is no more room for more dirt, and a lot remains to be removed from the hole.I called our landscaper, and she wants some (not sure how much). Eli will take some of the rocky stuff for his driveway. We called a trucking company but they could not come today. Eli has loosened up the remaining dirt so it will be fast to load into trucks. While he does this I jump down and pull out root pieces. Good exercise!
It sill looks like a very large amount of material to remove from the hole. The house where I’m staying could use some topsoil. The contractor was here today and said he would send his loader over to get three or four buckets full, but didn’t show up this afternoon. I guess that he, too, runs on ‘Taos Time’.
Yesterday we got water connected, the water meter installed, and one hydrant working. While digging for the water line we hit the water table about five feet down, which was deeper than we intended to go. The town water folks were very responsive installing the water meter. We will need the water to compact the soil and fill under the house and foundations.
The building inspector came around and suggested that we put up a fence. Her bureaucrats had not yet delivered the building plans to her, but she had them by today.
We put an orange security fence around the whole property - mostly to keep people from falling into the hole, but also to keep our junk from blowing into the neighboring property.
Hopefully, tomorrow we will get rid of all the remaining soil and can start filling the hole, starting with engineered gravel to support the footings, foundations, and slab weight. (The native soil is not suitable.)
