both Port Harcourt organs installed in 1957 by Fryemi, Lagos and overhauled by E.O Ekpenyong. Rebuilt in England.
Organs also in Calabar in Presbyterian, Anglican, and Methodist churches and Secondary School (1965) installed by J. Ludden.
Here is my letter to my folks written 30 July 1965:
Ferries are good for writing letters. After four days of hard labour (note English spelling) the Duke Town [Secondary School] organ works on an electric blower. The pastor was very generous with his hospitality. One of the church ladies cooked all my meals (for me) at the pastor's house. The pastor sent his car to fetch me (I stayed with a PCV) and take me around town when I needed. And today he gave me $70, which I couldn't accept and socially couldn't refuse. So instead of causing a scene (which I did last time--to no avail) I put the money in an envelope and put it where he would find it, less a token amount so he won't be insulted.
Altho Calabar people have lived with white men for 100 years, they are still amazed at technical achievements. The packing crate in which the blower came was more "wonderful" than the blower itself. We had some leaks and I asked the carpenter to listen and tell me where it was. He had no idea what to do! When I found it and just tightened a screw to stop the noise, everyone was amazed!
Well, that was a nice finish to my stay in Nigeria. Now I have to straighten the papers for the VW, my plane tickets, buy traveler's checks, and go! Only 3 days left. I got a copy of "The Lord of the Flies" for the plane trip.
