The east half of the house (plus the mechanical room) were given their final, color coat (shown wet) of stucco today. This is a major milestone, because the outside of the house won’t change much from now on. (We will put the front door back, and the garage door will come in a couple more weeks, but that is about all.) The plasterers will finish tomorrow and remove the scaffolding. I’m buying lunch for everyone in celebration! I reminded Eli to order the interior door locks today, and also that the interior doors are all stored in my garage. He was about to take the drywall scraps to the dump, but we need them to finish the door installations. That will allow us to put corner bead around the doorways and finish the painting preparation. Painting preparation does take a long time. I remember spending about three times as long preparing as painting — but this is new work. There are about four layers of wallboard mud, and it takes a day to dry between coats. Plus two of us can only get to two rooms each day. Since there are about 8 rooms, that means more than two weeks. The number of workers varies, as two of the crew were plastering the outside, Jake has been building the sills and other woodwork, and Eli has to run the show as well as be a soccer-dad for his teenage daughter.
The architect came by for his bi-weekly inspection. He declares us 75% finished, which points to the end of October to complete. Several other members of Valverde Commons have asked me about Bill Hoffmann as an architect. You can read earlier blog entries to see my reaction. I found him easy to work with and very thorough.
