Mid-day today I stained the planks that will shade my south-facing windows during the summer. Because the stain is so expensive ($25/quart - and the quart-size cans only hold 29 ounces!) I am only staining the parts that can be seen. The rest will get oil-based waterproofing at $18/gallon.
The stain color was chosen to be as close as possible to weathered Douglas Fir, called ‘red fir’ around here, which grows from British Columbia all the way down the mountain chains to Oaxaca state in Mexico. All my exterior wood will be stained this color — even the Western Red Cedar that surrounds my garage door (which was chosen because it is more resistant to rot close to the ground). The garage door color was chosen as close as possible to this same color.
I also did a bit more painting in the bathroom, but have more to do. Oh, yes, I did seal in the roof vents, using silicone caulking. One item off my To Do list!
We had many installations this week, resulting in a lot of cardboard packaging. Rather than pay to take this to the dump, I am carting it to the recycle center. I have used some of the bigger pieces to line the shelves in the garage, as they are relatively open wire mesh, and otherwise small stuff would fall through.The packaging came from:
