Throughout time, names of some places have disappeared or changed for various reasons. Listed below are names of some locations that appear in historical documents along with what the modern location that can be likened to. The America Field, Cleckheaton - Known locally as the "Merrika Cloise." This is what the field was called prior to the construction of West End Park. It was owned by the Low Moor Company and prior to that by America Brooke.
Ash House Field, Cleckheaton - The site on which Whitcliffe Road Wesleyan Chapel was built.
Back Lane, Cleckheaton - What is now Northgate.
Belly Bridge - An earlier reference to Bailiff Bridge.
Bottoms, Cleckheaton - In the area where the bus station now stands, bottom of the memorial park.
Brandy Croft Lane, Gomersal - What is now Drub Lane.
Brook Street, Moorend, Cleckheaton - In 1875 was renamed to Brooklyn Street.
Cemetery Road, Cleckheaton - Only seems to appear in the description of the 1871 & 1901 census and from it's location, it would appear to be the name of what is now Peaseland Road.
Chapel House, Cleckheaton - Likely to have been in the area of Whitechapel church. Possibly what were later known as Brown Cow Cottages. Also known as Chapel House Lane, White Chapel, Whitechapel Lane and Flatt Lane.
Cleckheaton Lane, Cleckheaton (see also Heaton Lane) - What was Upper Lane or now Westgate.
Common Top, Scholes - What is now known as Scholes Lane.
Crossley Street, Cleckheaton - What is now Albion Street
Far Common Road, Roberttown - What is now Roberttown Lane.
Flat or Flatt Lane, Cleckheaton - What is now the bottom part of Whitechapel Road.
Gomersal Lane, Littletown - What is now Listing Lane.
The Green, Cleckheaton - Probably what is more recently known as the Memorial Park, but earlier it was the area on Bradford Road near to The Nook. Also recorded in census records as "Top of the Green."
Hatchet (Moor) - An earlier reference to Hartshead (Moor)
Heaton Gate, Cleckheaton - Allegedly the site of an old toll bar at the bottom of Hartshead Moor.
Heaton Lane, Cleckheaton - What was Upper Lane or now Westgate.
Home or Holme Lane End/Road, Gomersal - The stretch of road from Birkenshaw roundabout down through Gomersal and what is now Bradford Road (top end) and Oxford Road (through Gomersal itself).
Hunsworth Moor, Cleckheaton - Probably not where you expect it to be! Hunsworth Moor was what is now Bradford Road from Moor End and probably to the area of Balme Road.
Jachin Street, Cleckheaton - Now called West Street, off Westgate (down the side of the Malt Shovel pub). Possibly named after a previous landlord of the pub who was called Jachin Firth.
Lane Ends, Cleckheaton - (1) An area around the junction of Bradford Road and St. Peg Lane. (2) The area around the junction of Whitechapel Road, Hunsworth Lane and Bradford Road.
Leeds & Elland Turnpike - One of the main arteries through the district running from Hill Top at Gomersal down Spen Lane into Cleckheaton and then up Westgate to the Pack Horse pubs at Hartshead Moor.
Little Liversedge - Now called Littletown.
Lodge - An area between Hunsworth & Birkenshaw traveling up Leeds & Whitehall Road.
Long Liversedge - Now called Hightown.
Main Street, Cleckheaton - Likely to have been the main road through Cleckheaton between Providence Place Chapel to the crossroads at St. Peg Lane (see also Town End).
Monarch Street, Cleckheaton - This was originally the first name chosen for what is now Clarence Street. It was chosen as Clarence Street instead because of Clarence Mills at that locality.
Peggy Street, Cleckheaton - This was a name that locals called Brooke Street, running parallel to St. Peg Lane.
Preston Terrace, Cleckheaton - Believed to be a row of 9 houses at the bottom of Bramhope Road at its junction with Heaton Avenue.
Raw Fields - What is now commonly known as Rawfolds.
School Street, Cleckheaton - What is now Cheapside.
Scratt or Scratch Lane, Gomersal - What is now Cliffe Lane.
Sharp's Buildings, Scholes - Believed to be now called Upper Green Avenue.
Sike or Syke (Fold), Liversedge - Although this location came under the Liversedge district, it was only just outside of Cleckheaton centre, located in the area of what is now Pyenot Hall Lane.
Town End, Cleckheaton - The area of what is now Bradford Road, probably between Providence Place Chapel and the Commercial pub (see also Main Street).
Upper Lane, Cleckheaton - What is now Westgate.
Upper Lane, Gomersal - What is now Latham Lane.
Vicarage Lane, Gomersal - What is now Fusden Lane.
Water Lane, Cleckheaton - What is now Balme Road.
Webster Lane, Scholes - Became Scholes Lane in the early 1940s.
Weddings Lane, Cleckheaton - Only appears in the description of the 1891 census. In the same district is Whitechapel church, so it is assumed that this was a locally known name for Whitechapel Road.
