The premises were literally an "alcohol-free" public house and was part of the temperance movement. Chairman, Samuel Reeve, a local manufacturing chemist.

William Brackenbury and John Wood were not seriously injured but a young man called Arthur Longden had a leg broken. The breaking of the sling was attributed to the frost.

18 Aug 1842 - Plug riots - A large band of men marched to Atkinson's Mill at Spen with the intention of stopping the boilers. They were met by a small force of cavalry who charged them with swords drawn and fired shots over their heads. Numerous prisoners were taken.

One part of the Mill was built as early as 1830 by Benjamin Firth for a school, one of the first places of education for the town. He later removed to the academy at Hartshead Manor. Many of the past occupants of Highfield House are associated with these premises.

3 Sep 1842 - Plug riots - At the Crown Court, York Castle, Thomas Kilburn was charged with having on 16 Aug 1842, conspired with others, for committing a riot and unplugging the boiler at the mill belonging to Mr George Anderton. He was found guilty and sentenced to 3 months hard labour.

26 Aug 1872 - Auction at the Royal Hotel, Cleckheaton: Substantial stone-built mill, boiler house and outbuildings known by the name of Walker's Mill, Northgate, Cleckheaton. The main building being three storeys with a wing at each end two storeys high, the whole measuring 151 feet long and 38 feet wide.
Also a brick-built erection, two storeys high, blacksmith's shop, slaughterhouse and shed adjoining the said mill and also a plot of valuable building land adjoining thereto. Premises comprise an area of approx. 2600 square yards. Drainage is excellent and there is an abundant supply of water from a well on the premises.

The first directors are Messrs. Edwin, William H and Arthur Roberts.
25 Nov 1902 - Voluntary liquidation of Damon Roberts & Sons, Ltd. Woodroyd mill offered for sale at auction. Mill described as having two storeys with a basement, engine and boiler houses, tempering mill, stabling etc. and a dwelling house and yard covering a total of 2136 square yards. Bidding started at £1000 but the property was withdrawn at £1500.
