Royal Albert Inn

Believed to have been established in the 1860's, this was located at the junction of Albion Street and Oak Street. Likely to have closed or been demolished in the early 1920s.

One of the previous landlords of this location was called Richard Evison Lockwood (born 1867 at Wakefield) who had claimed the fame of being the first ever Yorkshireman to captain  the England rugby team.

23 Aug 1869 - Brewster Sessions - Annual licence renewals were heard at Dewsbury and granted to Samuel Schofield, Royal Albion, Albion Street.

3 Apr 1881 - Census - Albion Street. Although premises not named other evidence suggests it was here. Beer house keeper recorded as Charles Thornton & family.

4 Sep 1882 - Court Case - Landlord of the Royal Albert Inn, Charles Thornton, was summoned for serving beer to a drunk. Fined 10s or 14 days.

6 May 1889 - Licence transfer - Royal Albert Hotel, Albion street. From Joseph Oldroyd to Elizabeth Oldroyd.

5 Apr 1891 - Census - Royal Albert Hotel, Oak Street. The widow Elizabeth Oldroyd shown as publican.

2 Jan 1893 - Licence transfer - Royal Albert Hotel, Albion street. From Elizabeth Oldroyd to Richard Evison Lockwood.

9 May 1904 - Auction - A beerhouse known as the Royal Albert Inn, situate at the junction of Albion Street and Oak Street, Heckmondwike and occupied by Mr. J Brook. The beerhouse, which was licenced prior to 1869 is a well-accustomed house enjoying regular trade.

6 Jun 1921 - Licence refused - The Compensation Authority refused to renew the licence for the Royal Albert. Presumably shortly after it was either closed down or demolished.
