Liversedge

Liversedge, containing the hamlets of Robert Town, Little Town, High Town and Mill Bridge, is a township and chapelry in the parish of Birstall, Dewsbury Union and wapentake of Morley and honor of Pontefract, 11 miles west of Leeds; it is a railway station on the Cleckheaton branch of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, midway between Huddersfield and Bradford. The population in 1851 was 6974 and the area 2144 acres.
At Liversedge are manufactures of coverlets, carpets, cloth, cards, machines, wire drawing and chemical works. There are also the Liversedge Iron Works. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry and diocese of York, annual value £150, in the gift of the vicar of Birstall. The Rev. Thomas Atkinson is the incumbent, and the Rev. Wm Hughes the curate.
Robert Town was, on the 22nd July 1847, constituted a separate ecclesiastical district and in 1851 had a population of 2038. Here is a church; the incumbent is the Rev. James Hutton Walton. Here are brickyards, card manufactories, chemical works and thread works.
At Little Town blanket manufactures are carried on. There are dyeworks, market gardens, collieries and scribbling mills
At Mill Bridge are Turkey carpet and rug and woollen mills; the other chief trades are ironfoundry, card making and brewing. Here is a railway station.
In High Town there are many good residences. The card manufacture is carried on here, there are also worsted and cotton mills.
