White Swan

Located at Cook Lane and was in the hands of the Stocks family for upwards of 50 years. Closed for trade in 1926.

23 Aug 1869 - Brewster Sessions - Annual session for the granting and renewal of licences was held at Dewsbury. It being the first session in which the new Wine and Beer Act was put in force. The licence for Thomas Craven of the White Swan, Cook Lane was granted without any objection.

22 May 1883 - Property Auction - Held at the Mechanics' Institute regarding the sale of a beerhouse known as "The White Swan" and in occupation of Reuben Stocks along with 6 adjoining cottages.

Jul 1883 - Brewery - Acquired by Springwell Brewery.

21 Nov 1884 - Licensing - An application was made by Reuben Stocks for the extension of the licence of the Swan Inn, Cook Lane to cover an adjoining cottage which the applicant had added to the property to improve accommodation. Granted subject to the property being examined.

19 Aug 1889 - Licence Transfer - White Swan Inn, Cook Lane. From Reuben Stocks to Margaret Stocks (widow of Reuben).

5 Apr 1891 - Census - Cook Lane. Premises not named but evidence suggests it was here. Innkeeper recorded as Margaret Stocks & family.

4 Jan 1897 - Licence Transfer - White Swan Inn, Cook Lane. From Margaret Stocks to Willie Stocks (son of Reuben & Margaret).

5 Feb 1897 - Probate Calendar - Reuben Stocks, innkeeper of Heckmondwike, died 30 Jun 1889 and left an estate valued at £112.

31 Mar 1901 - Census - 22 Cook Lane (premises not named). Innkeeper recorded as Willie Stocks & family.
