According to William Cudworth, the White Bear had been for upwards of a century in the hands of the Bateman family. It gave way to the much larger Richardson's Arms.
1771 - Alehouse Licence - The earliest record of Alehouse licences being granted is in 1771. At this time, just 2 unnamed premises are listed, one owned by Daniel Bateman (who is strongly suspected as being connected to the White Bear in Oakenshaw).
1773 - Alehouse Licence - Licences granted to three unnamed premises in Cleckheaton, one being owned by Daniel Bateman.
1 May 1786 - Newspaper article - A meeting was held at the house of Daniel Bateman, Oakenshaw and a committee formed to oversee the poor and direct the township's affairs.
1822 - Baines Trade Directory - White Bear, Oakenshaw. Landlord recorded as Jonas Bateman.
1834 - Pigot's Trade Directory - White Bear, Oakenshaw. Landlord recorded as Jonas Bateman (Jonas being the eldest son of the above mentioned Daniel).
18 Nov 1835 - Death Notice - Jonas Bateman, aged 76, innkeeper of Oakenshaw.
1841 - Trade Directory - Pigot & Co., National & Commercial Directory records Elizabeth Bateman at the White Bear
6 Jun 1841 - Census entry - Oakenshaw. Premises not named but evidence suggests it was here.
