CLECKHEATON
1857 - The Post Office Directory lists John Siddall, among other things, as having a circulating library. These were often found at the premises of book-sellers. Books were an expensive commodity at this time and many people could not afford them. Circulating libraries enabled people to either subscribe yearly at a fraction of the cost of one book or alternatively pay a small rent per book.
5 Jan 1884 - A new library for Cleckheaton opens in a block of buildings behind the Co-operative Society at Moor End. In the same block is a reading room with newspapers and periodicals. The company announce that 2.5% of their profits is devoted to education.
15 Nov 1928 - A special meeting of the District Council was held after John Gunn Mowat offers to build and equip a public library in Cleckheaton.
14 Nov 1930 - Cleckheaton library opened by Mr & Mrs John Gunn Mowat.
1954 - Mobile libraries introduced to the area.
9 Nov 1973 - Official opening of the new extension to Cleckheaton library, performed by Lucy Marcia Mowat, daughter of John Gunn Mowat who had donated the original building.
3 Sep 2022 - The Jubilee Arch, marking 70 years reign of Queen Elizabeth II, was unveiled at Cleckheaton Library with thanks to Cleckheaton in Bloom & Cleckheaton District Rotary.Â
