The 1911 Census was taken on the night of 2 April 1911. This particular census was the first time that the householder themselves completed the schedule, so the handwriting of each return is different and we can often see some details that would not be recorded had the Enumerator filled in the form.Â
The details required for this census were now quickly evolving. As well as basic details from previous census years, an exciting addition, as far as the family historian is concerned, is the addition of how long the wife of the household had been married, the number of children she had had and how many of them were still alive or had died. It was also quite common for widowed women and men to complete these details. Also included was further occupational details and the number of rooms at the house. Details of the questions to be answered can be found in the images below. The buttons relate to the areas within the Spen Valley. More areas will be added in due course.
