The Rose and Crown, or Ye Old Rose and Crown is one of the few oldest pubs in Cleckheaton still standing. It would seem from evidence available that the house was in possession of the Rooks family since at least the mid 1700's. It was then passed down through the generations to 1871 when the great great grandson of the original owner was recorded as landlord.
1751 - 1820 - Family info - Joseph Charlesworth, who we can certainly link to the Rose & Crown, married Mary Rooks in 1811. Mary was the daughter of John Rooks, who is believed to be the same John Rooks mentioned in the earlier Alehouse licence of 1781. John Rooks' father was also called John Rooks and, as early as 1751, there is record of him being an innkeeper in "Clagheaton". John Rooks (snr) died in 1763 and in the following year his widow, Martha, remarried to Thomas Dixon, who is also mentioned in the early alehouse licences. In 1824 John Rooks (junior died). Joseph & Mary Charlesworth have several children baptised at Whitechapel between their marriage and 1820 but he is recorded as a cloth maker from Hightown. It isn't until 1820 when he is recorded as a publican of Cleckheaton, so we can assume he took the pub around this time.
